New footage of Eric Stolz playing Marty McFly in Back to the Future released

MICHAEL J. Fox wasn't the first actor cast as Marty McFly in Back to the Future, with shocking new footage of a young Eric Stolz playing the part to be released on DVD.
Stolz was a heavy five weeks into shooting when director and co-writer Robert Zemeckis made the radical decision to change his lead actor, believing he didn't have the comic ability to get the laughs they were hoping for.

Details of the drastic switch for the 1985 film and never-before-seen footage of Stolz playing the part that helped define Fox's career and turn him into a household name are part of the DVD extras for the Back to the Future 25th Anniversary Trilogy being released in the US on October 26.

In the package, Zemeckis says the casting change was a horrific decision.

"He's a magnificent actor but his comedy sensibilities were very different than what I had written with Bob (Gale) and he and I were just never able to make that work," he says.
"It was heartbreaking for everybody."

Executive producer Steven Spielberg said he realised his director was "absolutely correct" after watching back the scenes that had been shot.
Stolz is best known for his roles in Pulp Fiction and Mask and various television roles.
He is now starring in the sci-fi television series Caprica.
